Since James Owen had left the Widow's Spoon, the office had been a wreck. No one was quite sure what to do without his leadership and the presence of the Brothers had begun to scare them into submission.
Timothy had been under James, despite the fact he was significantly older and had more experience. This had been because the man had intended to retire that year and wanted a younger, more alert man to already be the local law enforcement head. James had been a detective, he was referred to as detective though his rank was great and his sound, quiet thoughts had served him well in patiently undermining some of the Brother's plans for this city. When faced with a major loss, though, James respectfully stepped down from his post and went elsewhere. Timothy had tried to convince him not to but James was convinced that the failure had been due to him and that another man needed to take the stage.
James would go on the gather himself and his courage elsewhere. In the mean time, the law enforcement was much like a body without a head.
Timothy had sent out notice for the available job, though he colored it in a positive, fake light.
What the ad had failed to say is that the job would be more than a minor challenge, but an incredible test of a person. With the Brothers bearing down hard on the city and the local enforcement in shambles, the town was close to being given up to the dogs for all its chaos. Timothy hadn't even grown up here and he already saw a marked difference in how the town had changed within the year.
At his desk, he sighed as papers, complaints and notices were piling up. He wanted to admit he wasn't good enough and just leave as James had but... it would only magnify the situation. He could not retire until he knew that the town would not be swallowed and disappear under the Brothers' hand. Whatever their plans were, Timothy had not seen anything glorious or loved arise from it but instead it spread like a poison causing the beautiful things to wilt.
Who would answer such an ad in a place like this?
