Prologue....
The walls were heavy stone and the wax candles had been burning a long time, dripping waxy lines down their holders and onto the table. Only two people were in the room, a man significantly older than the other but both wearing the same simple, dark brown robes. Both priests dedicated to the same order as they copied down information by hand as their ancestors had.
"Sir," The younger man said to the old, his quill pausing, "In the beginning there was God and Light and creation, but Lucifer didn't love or respect that creation?"
"Lucifer, and the other angels, were jealous," the older man corrected, his pen continuing on with his work, "As it is with all creatures that love themselves before God."
"What about the demons and the gates? What about... the opening of the portals?"
He sat back in silence a moment. Gathering his thoughts as he decided what to tell and what needed to be kept. With a faint sigh he rose from the table, indicating the younger should follow him as he made his way to the hearth, taking a seat in the ragged chair, lighting a pipe and taking another moment to gather thoughts while the younger settled into the other well-used seat.
"We know them as God, as Satan, but in truth they have no name. They simple were beings beyond our minute comprehension. Each held its own world, or realm if you will. Each realm existed on its own plane, with gates to travel between the two.
No one really knows, not even the angels, how these gates came to be. Perhaps they were from a time before these beings, perhaps they where created for travel. Anyone can speculate. What we do know now, having learned from past mistakes is they can be opened, and they can be sealed, but never destroyed for they seem to have a sentiant life beyond even those we call God and Satan."
"We have learned from the past, from those Angels we have come to know, that the gates were sealed at a time of war. When Lucifer entered Sheoul and became what we call the Devil, Satan, etc etc. But he is not the true king of Hell, but a Prince of Sheoul, or hell, if you will.
When he entered Sheoul in defiance of God, that which we call God saw the possiblities, and decided that the gates needed to be sealed. He sent his angels to do that. It was a great battle but eventually all the gates were sealed, and no longer could Lucifer and his kind travel to our Earth, or the Heavens. Hell had become their prison."
"In time, history was forgotten but for those in Sheoul and those in Heaven."
"Man grew in their knowledge. Some where corrupt and that which we now call demons, began to whisper. For though they could not leave their prison, they could communicate with Man. That was one of the wagers God had made. To prove his creation was innocent, He had to allow for the possiblity of corruption. Perhaps, that was his arrogance? Maybe he expected too much from man at the beginning."
"During the wars corrupt and arrogant men thought themselves able to control their world and decided to listen to the whispers. They opened the first gate, thinking they could use the creatures of Sheoul to their benefit. Instead... they unleashed a plague of demons on us. These same Demons then began opening others till all gates stood open and free to access.
A few of God's Angels took it upon themselves to try to right this wrong, by giving us, the Priests, knowledge of how to seal the gates once more. That is now our task." It seemed the old man's face realized he had an audience once more and looked to the younger priest with a melancholy smile, "Well, not yours, not mine, but those of our brothers, our sisters, with the help of other humans and even other beings."
"Our task, my boy, is to record history, to make sure that this never happens again."
"As to how the Demons came to be, they are those angels that the Devil was able to corrupt, they fell to earth, and from there they where given a choice. Make a supreme sacrifice and in doing so repent and earn their wings back, or enter a gate and become the twisted creatures we now deal with. Those we call demons are just those dark angels, twisted and changed by their experiances in Sheoul."
Taking a slow puff from the pipe and watching the hazy smoke waft into the air as he exhaled. It made him uncomfortable, sometimes, to summarize the state of being so quickly. So many details were left unsaid but he had given the youth enough that the boy sat quietly, staring with wide eyes at the fire.
"What's going to happen to us?" The boy looked back to the older man.
The smoke was disappearing from around his lips, "We'll find out soon enough."
